each one opens that doorway to hypnosis more and more deeply.
So what did we do in this case? Well, in the demonstration I showed you, we had that
arm locked out stiff. Why? It was partly a test for you to see where they re at, and it s
partly a convincer for them to prove to them that it s happened. It also helps open those
floodgates of response, more response, even more response and even more response.
At that point, the S continues. We continue with a gift. Of course, we ve talked about
all the different things to do within that gift already.
So the ABS Formula really has dictated how the whole process goes. From them
standing on one side, to moving, to getting their attention, to bypassing the critical
factor, to stimulating their unconscious mind. Now the world s your oyster. You can
suggest almost anything, and providing you do it in a step-by-step fashion, building the
experiences up, it will be easy to get responses.
The next thing I d like for you to bear in mind and this is very important in the whole
hypnotic process, a place where a lot of people go wrong is that compliance testing.
You see, it s so invisible that most people forget about it and don t see it. Your job as a
hypnotist starts the moment you tell someone, I m a hypnotist. They ll go, really? Now
you start compliance testing. How are they responding? Are they defensive? Are they
backing off? Are they being cynical or doubtful, or are they open-minded and going,

really? Are they a little bit afraid but kind of curious? All these things tell you something
about them.
The key thing you re looking for is:
1. Do they feel comfortable enough around you to kind of do what you say
without asking too many questions about it?
If you say, come stand over here a bit, and they say why should I do that, they re not
compliant? If you say, would you look up this way a second and they go, why would you
want me to look? Again, they re not being compliant. If you just say, come stand over for
a moment, and they do quite easily and naturally, you re good to go. So if they re
compliant in the beginning in other words, they re not following your instructions
before you ve even begun, don t begin.
What I like to do, especially if you re in a group at that point, is choose someone else. It,
basically, tells people either you behave, or I ll go somewhere else. Why should I force
you to hypnosis when it s such a wonderful thing? It s a gift. I ll give it to the person that
wants it. That s okay. You don t want to follow along? Don t worry. Just rest there.
Watch this person. Come this way. That s it. There you go. In you go.
So the Compliance section is very important, and compliance happens at every stage of
the way. Please look at me. Remember? That again, is compliance. If they look at you,
you re good to go, and you happen to have their attention too. So you re having those
two things going on at the same time.
I cannot emphasize this enough. Compliance is part of the hypnotic context. Comfort
and trust means that they ll have compliance. It means they ll naturally follow your
suggestions even before you go into hypnosis. If you say to someone, put your hands
up like this, and they say okay, well, they re in a great place to do it. If you say, put your
hands up like this and they ask why? Well then, don t start with that person. Start with
someone else instead.
Now this brings us to the next point. This is the next insider s secret. When we talk
about compliance, if you ve been challenged too much, you don t begin because that
challenge mindset is, basically, us versus them. I ll show you, Mister Hypnotist. That
means the mind is not in the right place to do hypnosis. The time to challenge someone
in hypnosis is at the end of the process.
Remember with the stiff arm and so on? We did that after a whole bunch of compliance
and testing and so, so then we know the unconscious mind is taking over the functions,
and they re not going to change what they re doing.
In other words, when you say the arm is stiff, you can t bend it, and they re going, you re
right. I can t bend it. Now if the first thing out of your mouth you say your arm is stiff, you

can t bend it, and they ll go, what do you mean? Now, of course, sometimes you ll strike
gold and be lucky, and they ll go, you are so right. But we don t want to take those risks.
One of the big mistakes that, shall we say, novice hypnotists make actually this
happens a lot, even with seasoned experts is they create this challenge frame. They ll
say, hey, I m Hypno-Man, and I m going to hypnotize any one of you. Try and resist me.
Come on. What s going to happen there is someone s going to go, you think you can
hypnotize me. I ll show you. So you don t want that person who says, I ll show you how
you can fail. I want to prove to Hypno-Man that he ll fail. You don t want to work with
those people. Why? It s the wrong mindset.
Now a way to get around this is actually very simple. You switch the frame. You switch
what the whole interaction means. Let me show you something cool about how the mind
works.
Let s do an experiment about the power of your mind.
f& What happens here?
They re going to follow along with what you re saying because it s in their interests. I
always want to give the person a reason for succeeding at what we re doing, not a
reason for failing. Why? Well, let s take the idea of the test, for example.
If I have a feeling that person thinks I d rather prove to myself that I m stronger than the
hypnotist so I can bend my arm anyway well, at that point, there s a conflict going on.
He s going to get a payoff to make me fail. I don t want that. I want him to have a payoff
to make me succeed. How might I do that?
Let me show you something cool about how strong you can be. Lock it out so strong
that not even you can bend it. Now they ve got something to gain to prove how strong
they are. Sometimes you ll come across a person who s following along, but they re just
on the cusp. To be entirely sure, I like to throw in extra things to make sure that I
succeed. What do I do? I m going to give them a reason to succeed.
If you go back and watch some of the demos, you ll notice that with one or two of the
individuals there, we gave them extra reasons for succeeding with the arm being stiff.
What were they? They got to take all their burdens in life, the negative energy, bad
